OUR MISSION
2- ... that people who receive financial help for a veterinary emergency be given the opportunity to return their gift by becoming mentors, by volunteering for VEFM, or by supporting the VEFM fund financially.
3- ... that it is the responsibility of both the local pet-owning and veterinary communities to make emergency care available--that this is not a national responsibility but a grass-roots responsibility.
4-... that the vision of VEFM will extend to communities all across the United States, possibly even the world.

Lucy-
I think this is a great idea. You may want to take nominations from either or both folks who are members or know of members whose animals have undergone critical or emergency care- and who have thrived afterwards- a lot like the spokes people from the Heart or Cancer Association.

I agree a "survivor" story would be perfect. Heather
One excellent suggestion for the Spokespet contest is to get donations for a Grand Prize and Runner-Up from companies who sell products or services that help pet owners prevent or cope with veterinary emergencies.
Dr. Schroth,
If you decide to go with the idea of getting donations for a prize basket, you should also approach Petco and ask them to offer a gift cert. for their online pet first aid course. I would offer a complimentary private session to the winner but I only work in Los Angeles and Central Oregon areas, so it might be unlikely that the winner lives in either of those locations. But I took the Petco course out of curiosity (I like to take other courses regularly like Red Cross, etc.) - anyway, I found the Petco online course to be pretty good, and it would certainly be an inexpensive thing for them to donate, and virtually any winner with a computer could benefit from it. I may be partial to the cause, but I think that EVERY pet parent should learn pet first aid!
Thanks for that suggestion, Melanie. It is an excellent idea!

VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance) has a very interesting story contest. We could easily adapt this concept for our Spokespet Contest. Take a look: http://www.vpihamboneaward.com/
